FX has handed out a 13-episode series order to comedy pilot Wilfred for a summer 2011 launch. The project, based on the acclaimed Australian series of the same name, was hot from the script stage and then it solidified its chances in the pilot stage by landing Lord of the Rings's Elijah Wood to star opposite Jason Gann, co-creator and star of the original series. David Zuckerman, who wrote the pilot script and serves as executive producer, describes Wilfred as comedy “about a guy, Ryan (Wood), the girl next door (Fiona Gubelmann), and mixed-breed dog, Wilfred (Gann), who is part Labrador retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender.” Randall Einhorn directed the pilot for FX Prods. Rich Frank, Paul Frank, Jeff Kwatinetz, Joe Connor and Ken Conner also exec produce. Wilfred is adding to FX's rapidly expending comedy series portfolio, which includes It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Archer, The League and Louie.

Two Comedy Pilots Land Leads
Fiona Gubelmann has landed the female lead opposite Jason Gann and Elijah Wood lead in FX’s comedy pilot Wilfred, while Malcolm-Jamal Warner has been tapped for the male lead opposite Tracee Ellis Ross in the BET comedy pilot Reed Between the Lines.
Based on the Australian series of the same name, Wilfred revolves around a guy, Ryan (Wood), the girl next door/potential love interest (Gubelmann), and her mixed-breed dog Wilfred (Gann).
Reed centers on Dr. Carla Reed (Ross), a busy psychiatrist, wife and mom struggling to balance her job and her happy but chaotic homelife. The Cosby Show alum Warner is expected to play her husband.

FX snags Elijah Wood for new comedy 'Wilfred'
Drama-heavy FX is getting serious about comedy. To wit: The cabler has successfully wooed ex-hobbit Elijah Wood to headline its in-the-works U.S. remake of the hit Australian sitcom Wilfred.
The project, which is being adapted by Family Guy vet David Zuckerman, revolves around a guy (Wood), a girl, and a mixed-breed dog named Wilfred that Zuckerman describes as “part Labrador retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender.”
Jason Gann, who co-created and starred in the Aussie version, will once again play the title role (that is when said title role appears in human form).
This marks Wood’s first major foray into television. The Lord of the Rings vet will next be seen this fall in The Romantics opposite Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, and Anna Paquin.
Production on the Wilfred pilot will begin later this summer.

Randall Einhorn To Direct FX Pilot 'Wilfred'
It’s been quite a week for Randall Einhorn. First, the one-time cinematographer who switched to directing episodic TV a couple of years ago, landed his first feature directing job on the Alcon/Warner Bros. Late Bloomer. Now he has been tapped to helm his first pilot, FX's Wilfred.
Wilfred is a live-action comedy based on the popular Australian series of the same name, with Jason Gann, who co-created and starred in the original, also attached to topline the U.S. version. Here's how David Zuckerman, who wrote the U.S. adaptation, describes the project: “Wilfred is about a guy, the girl next door, and mixed-breed dog, Wilfred, who is part Labrador retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender.”
Einhorn was a cinematographer on NBC’s The Office until he tried his hand at directing in 2006 and eventually changed careers. He has helmed 12 episodes of The Office as well as episodes of ABC's Modern Family and NBC's Parks and Recreation. WME-repped Einhorn recently worked with FX on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He directed half of the comedy’s 12-episode fall 2009 season, including the opener and the finale.
