No one can accuse CBS’ The Good Wife of playing it safe in season 2.

When the Emmy-nominated procedural returns this fall, Stern, Lockhart & Gardener will be in the midst of merging with another firm. The ensuing shakeup throws “everyone for a loop,” reveals executive producer Robert King, “[especially partners] Will [Josh Charles] and Diane [Christine Baranski]. And Alicia [Julianna Margulies], who thought she was [in the clear], once again has to prove herself in new surroundings.”

She’s not the only one. Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) finds her private eye turf threatened by her counterpart at the new company. The character, Blake, is described as a thirtysomething hottie whose cynical attitude is offset by lots of humor and sexual charisma. Wife is also casting the role of Corey, the head of the new firm and a mentor of sorts to Alicia.

“We want to improve on what we did the first season,” says King. “We want to continue to take chances, be contemporary, and push the envelope.”

Sounds like Wife is well on its way to accomplishing all three. Wouldn’t you agree?
